CET handouts and notes: read (XVI)
Our culture has caused most Americans to assume not only that our language is universal but that the gestures we use are understood by everyone. We do not realize that waving good-bye is the way to summon a person from the Philippines to one side, or that in Italy and some Latin-American countries, curling the finger to oneself is a sign of farewell.
Those private citizens who sent packages to our troops occupying Germany after World War II and marked them GIFT to escape duty payments did not bother to find out that “Gift” means poison in German. Moreover, we like to think of ourselves as friendly, yet we prefer to be at least 3 feet or an arm length away form others. Latins and Middle Easterners like to come closer and touch, which makes Americans uncomfortable.
Our linguistic (verbal) and cultural blindness and the casualness with which we take notice of the developed tastes, gestures, customs and languages ??of other countries, are losing us friends, business and respect in the world.
Even here in the United States, we make few concessions to the needs of foreign visitors. There are no information signs in four languages ??on our public buildings or monuments; we do not have multilingual (multilingual) guided tours. Very few restaurant menus have translations, and multilingual waiters, bank clerks and policemen are rare. Our transportation systems have maps in English only and often we ourselves have difficulty understanding them.
When we go abroad, we tend to cluster in hotels and restaurants where English is spoken. The attitudes and information we pick up are conditioned by those natives-usually the richer-who speak English. Our business dealings, as well as the nation diplomacy, are conducted through interpreters.
For many years, America and Americans could get by with cultural blindness and linguistic ignorance. After all, America was the most powerful country of the free world, the distributor of needed funds and goods.
But all that is past. American dollars no longer buy all good things, and we are slowly beginning to realize that our proper role in the world is changing. A 1979 Harris poll reported that 55 percent of Americans want this country to play a more significant role in world affairs; we want to have a hand in the important decisions of the next century, even though it may not always be the upper hand.

Good evening, dear tomasters and guests! Tonight, I will do the project of CC1.Well, the theme of the CC1 is about introduction. < br />
As I am a rookie in tosmaster, maybe all of you don know me very well, and i just want to have a introduction to you.Well, back to the speech.I would like to make myself known by you with 4 key words: The first key word is joker. In the dictionary, jokers means those who makes joys.however, a joker responsbility is not making fun of others to get himself happiness, but to be the spreader of fun and joys! I like smiling, and a person don burn into tears easily! Take james as an example, i think james is an joker, he always brings us fun. I hope i can bring people around me happiness, affecting them with my effort. The second key word is active, which meams I always energetic. If there something that interests me or it worthwhile to do, I will go for it, no matter how tired i am. Before standing on the stage, i feel a little bit tired, but this is the firt time that i make an english speech in front of so many people, why not try to perform as active as you can, and leave people a good impression. I try to be active, energetic , which is the essential quality a tosmaster should have! And I do believe how you behave will effect others! My perform is telling others, hey guy, wake up! Be active! Show your endless power! Show your determination! The third key word is casualness.of course, casualness doesn mean i a casual person.It describes a kind of life style. Never force myself to do everything right or properly. Take this speech for example, the result is not that important, if i did it badly, that means i can make progress next time. if i did it well, let it be.cherish it. Anyway, I enjoy the process! what more, I don really pay much attention on which clothes to wear , what food food dinner. I think a leading a easy, simple life, I love it. Last but not the least, king.I would like to be the king of my life. That doesn mean i have to be in possession of too much wealth. In our lives, we will make a lot of decisions, some are important, some are less important. And I would like to make every desicion on my own. When i am growing up, i e made a lot desicions effected by others. I don like that way. Everyone is an individual who should take responsibilty for himself. I the king of my life.All I want to convey is that to be independent! I don like to rely on others.

students who received the job. Frankly I came to Hangzhou, as far as I know the only one still sticking to the parodies PubMed students to read, sent me to encourage one another, of course, we also see the strength of these sentences is not a generic template or classroom can teach . My comments are below, the only way everyone will be more targeted to improve writing.
Zhang, today I parodies the first 06 years of reading the first paragraph. I quote:
① In spite of “endless talk of difference,” American society is an amazing machine for homogenizing people. Strong> ② There is “the democratizing uniformity of dress and discourse, and the casualness and absence of deference “characteristic of popular culture. strong> ③ People are absorbed into” a culture of consumption “launched by the 19th-century department stores that offered” vast arrays of goods in an elegant atmosphere. strong> ④ Instead of intimate shops catering to a knowledgeable elite, “these were stores” anyone could enter, regardless of class or background. strong> This turned shopping into a public and democratic act. “The mass media, advertising and sports are other forces for homogenization.
my parodies:
According to the first sentence, I think 11 years of environmental protection, I wrote a incomplete sentence:
In spite of “endless talk of signifcance strong> [g1] “, environmental protection is still a (long and winding) goal. strong> I want to express “long way to go in goal,” did not think of a suitable expression.
the same time I thought pension Cup 2005, I wrote such a sentence:
In spite of “endless talk of family responsibility”, taking care of our old strong> [g2] parents is still a headache to many young people.
strong> strong> According to the second sentence, I would like to up the cultural pot for 10 years, I wrote such a sentence:
There is “the combination of East and West, strong> [g3] the compatible existence of different thoughts “characteristic of cultural chafing-dish. strong> [g4]
strong> According to the third sentence, I think the 09-year network Far and near, I write such a sentence:
People are involved into a strong> “world of imagine strong> [g5] ” produced by the 20th-century Internet technology that offered strong> “vast arrays of informations strong> ” in computer.
strong> strong> According to the fourth sentence, I think the American girl in 2002, I wrote such a sentence:
Instead of fashionable clothes similar to other American girls, it is traditional Chinese costume which universal in our Yun-nan province . strong> not completely understand what you mean. But it is strong> followed by stress, it should use that strong> son. Many times they have to change, and self-improvement.
strong> strong> please help teachers to change, are you, thank you! I have a strong psychological endurance! Ha ha ha ~
strong> Summer Intensive of the students [g1] is not fluent so realistic, meaning that, although everyone about the importance of commonplace, but what is the importance of it? You can be replaced even though we always emphasis on sustainable development, environmental protection, but the vision seems a long way to go. However, English is the continued development of sustainable development [g2] suggested aged, so more respect. [G3] What combination of East and West? Should not be a geographical section, right? [G5] virtual world? Imagination of the world? imaginary world

all the way forward, though full of thorns but also epic proportions of nectar. . . The beginning of Section xmlnamespace prefix = “o” ns = “urn: schemas-microsoft-com: office: office” />
section must begin with the language concise, and direct cut to the chase. Beginning segment generally does not explore the subject in depth, the specific argument or narrative sections should be extended. Generally written in the beginning of section four, five can be. Candidates should note the following several points:
1) the role of the beginning of paragraph
general statement theme, make a point or argument, that the intention of writing.
2) candidates to write at the beginning of paragraphs should be avoided when a number of issues
① start off topic too far;
② regret or complain about the words used ;
③ content is not specific, saying nothing;
④ use of self-evident statements.
3) at the beginning section of the expressions
① use quotations (use a quotation)
use some famous celebrities, or people used proverbs , idioms, to determine the scope and direction of writing the article.
Example:
“Great minds must be ready not only to take the opportunity, but to make them.” xmlnamespace prefix = “st1″ ns = “urn: schemas- microsoft-com: office: smarttags “/> Colton, a great writer once remarked. But it still has a profound significance now. To a person, in whose lifetime opportunities are not many, to make opportunities is more essential to his success. < br />
② the use of specific numbers or detailed data (use figures or statistics)
detailed reference to specific figures or data, and then make a general analysis, indicate where the problem lies.
Example: In the past 5 years there has been a marked decline in the number of young married couples who want to have children, coupled with a growing trend toward delayed childbearing. According to official statistics, in 2003 , about 28 percent of married couples with wives under 35 gave no birth to children, compared with the 1993 level of 8 percent.
③ questions (ask a question)
raise controversial or exploratory specific questions with brief answers or to start and then leading a brief discussion.
Example: What do you want from your work? Money? Promotions? Interesting challenges? Continual learning? Work-based friendships? The opportunity to develop your own idea and potentials? Though we are all individuals and so our answers will differ, all agree that work provide more than material things.
④ given background (offer relevant background)
describe specific incidents of the time, place and occurrence of background and so on.
Example: Once in a newspaper I read of a crowd of people who remained appallingly indifferent to the plea of ??a mother. As she failed to offer the required amount of cash as a price to save her drowning son , the woman at last watched her son sink to death. The story is not rare in newspapers and on TV, and the casualness and detachment our people now have developed has aroused nationwide concern.
⑤ defined method ( give definition)
for discussion topics or issues to be defined, and then in depth.
Example: Flexibility is defined as being adaptable to change. In the course of your lifetime, it is essential that you learn to bend and flex around every new circumstance, as rigidity deprives you of the opportunity to see new possibilities. Paradigms change over time, and so must you. Your company may restructure, and you will have to survive. Your spouse may choose to leave the marriage, and you will have to cope. Technology will continue to advance and change, and you must constantly learn and adapt or risk becoming a dinosaur. Flexibility allows you to be ready for whatever curve lies ahead in life instead of getting blindsided by it.
⑥ theme syntax (use of topic sentence) < br />
beginning of the article topic sentence is highlighted with full theme, and then around the theme content development. Example:
Now people become increasingly aware of the importance of acquiring a mastery of a foreign language. To them, the knowledge of a foreign language, say, English, often means a good opportunity for one career, even a passport to a prosperous future. Many of them equate success in life with the ability of speaking a foreign language.
